Walsh as they guide viewers through the world-premiere exhibition, discussing the history, artistry, and preservation of Hollywood scenic backdrops.

The tour introduces many of the exhibition’s featured backdrops, including North by Northwest, Ben-Hur, The Sound of Music, Singin’ in the Rain, National Velvet, and Marie Antoinette. Throughout the video, Maness and Walsh explain how scenic artists collaborated to create paintings designed for the camera rather than the human eye, why these artists rarely received screen credit, and how the Backdrop Recovery Project helped preserve these works. They also demonstrate historic scenic painting techniques, discuss George Gibson’s innovations at MGM, and explain how students at Texas Performing Arts use the collection to learn traditional scenic art methods today.

Teaching Through the Collection
During the tour, Karen Maness explains how the Hollywood Backdrop Collection serves as an active teaching resource at Texas Performing Arts and The University of Texas at Austin. Students study the original paintings to understand historic scenic art techniques, including color matching, perspective, atmospheric effects, and the collaborative methods developed by Hollywood studios. They also help prepare the backdrops for exhibition while learning how traditional scenic painting informs contemporary work in theatre, film, and digital design. Throughout the tour, Maness emphasizes that preserving these paintings also preserves the knowledge and craftsmanship behind them, ensuring that future generations of artists can continue learning from the masters of Hollywood scenic art.
